Greetings Division 16 Affiliate!
The first issue of the Division 16 Newsletter is being presented with a great deal of enthusiasm and pride! This newsletter is the culmination of efforts from many ASHA members…. those who have paved the way before us and those who are currently working on the Division 16 projects. I wish to personally thank Fran Block, our Newsletter Editor, and the authors of the articles for all their hard work on this edition.
Approximately 2 years ago, a group of ASHA Legislative Councilors decided that a Legislative Council (LC) school issues caucus would be timely in helping to address the many school-based concerns being expressed by our constituents. During this first LC school caucus in 1997, creation of an ASHA special interest division was proposed to further meet the needs of school-based audiologists/speech-language pathologists and those associated with the school setting (representing over 50% of ASHA membership). It was proposed that this division would focus on the grassroots issues inherent in the school setting while offering a “collective voice,” increased direct representation, and more visibility at the national level. It was the intent of the founding group to have the new division complement those divisions already in existence. Thus, the momentum for the establishment of Division 16 began. We are appreciative to everyone who has supported this endeavor.
