In the pamphlet “Noise Hurts,” published by the League for the Hard of Hearing, several facts are noted: “28 million people in the United States have a hearing loss. Noise is one of the leading causes of hearing loss, especially in young people. Noise negatively affects learning and behavior. Noise-induced hearing loss is preventable.”
Working in the school setting has also made me more aware of loudness levels within students’ environment. School, especially the gymnasium and the cafeteria, is noisy. Most students now own a personal music device with headphones. How many times have I been able to hear a student’s music as I walked past him, even though he had on headphones? Loud music is not only coming from teens’ automobiles, but from preteens’ radios, boom boxes, and Walkmans.
