Currently, speech-language pathologists in Virginia Beach City Public Schools are taking a critical and direct role through the use of technology in the development of literacy for all students by participating in an innovative technology program entitled Literacy Excellence Via Enhanced Language Skills. LEVELS provides technology-based activities for students who are delayed in their literacy and language skills. LEVELS was developed by the two speech-language pathologists in the Assistive Technology (AT) Office of Virginia Beach City Public Schools. Many students who were experiencing reading and writing difficulties were referred for software recommendations and interventions. Once exposed to the various software programs in combination with a strong language foundation, students began to read for the first time through a multimodality approach. These success stories were the impetus for exploring the possibility of providing this unique literacy opportunity for all students throughout the school system.
