Happy Birthday, Division 16!
Divi 16 is now in its sixth year of existence. Currently, the division has over 3,200 members and is growing. It’s very encouraging to know there are so many of us who want to interact and gain knowledge about school issues from colleagues all over the U.S. and internationally (we have a number of Div 16 colleagues from different countries).
The following are recent Div 16 updates that I think will be of special interest to you:
During the last ASHA Legislative Council (LC) meeting held in Washington, DC, the councilors ranked priority issues according to the ASHA member feedback. The entire LC body, which also includes the AUD/Hearing Science and the SLP/Speech Science Assemblies, ranked “school services” (#5) among the top five issues along with recruitment and retention/shortages (#1), marketing the professions (#2), reimbursement (#3), encroachment (#4). Other issues identified by the LC were professional autonomy, audiologic rehabilitation issues, and cultural competence and diversity. This information was forwarded to the ASHA Executive Board (EB) for consideration in determining the ASHA Focused Initiatives for 2006.
