Welcome to the August 2012 issue of Special Interest Group (SIG) 16's Perspectives.
SallyAnn Giess, Perspectives editor, has again prepared an outstanding issue for your professional growth. In this issue, we focus on understanding how environmental toxins may affect the development of speech and language, with an additional article providing an overview of genetic causes and contributions to communication disorders. The August issue of Perspectives also marks our first issue using the new ScholarOne platform for publication. SIG 16 is serving as a test SIG as ASHA transitions to using ScholarOne to publish Perspectives for all SIGs. We are especially grateful to the authors, Jennifer Garrett, Yvette Hyter, Deborah Hwa-Froelich, Maureen Swanson, and Nancy Hepp, and our peer reviewers, Lisa Keane, Sheryl Ameryl, and Charlette Green, who were part of this transition. Frank Wisswell and Tori Koulakjian from the National Office deserve a special thank you for their outstanding support in helping SallyAnn and Lisa navigate the new system. Last, ASHA's Board of Directors recently approved the SIG 16-initiated resolution that created an ASHA Award for Special Contributions in Preschool–Grade 12 Educational Settings.
